"He smiled back, though, looking allured."

Bella Swan has sent herself to live with her father in the small town of Forks. Her first day of school is much as she expects – lots of staring at the new girl, no advanced courses, and horror of horrors: gym. The one thing she doesn’t expect is to meet Edward Cullen. Edward is in a word….gorgeous. He is also not human. But how does one accuse the boy you’re quickly falling for of being a vampire? Especially when you’re not entirely certain of what’s going on or if he could possibly feel the same way.

My Opinion: Okay, before I start this, I have to do a disclaimer. This is a TEENAGE novel. Granted, I was older than that when I first read it, and still enjoyed it, but it is meant as a high school romance. Not to be taken any more seriously than movies like “She’s All That” and “Cinderella Story”. OK. This is a fun modern fantasy romance. Bella is like many readers; awkward, shy, intelligent and secretly adventurous. Bella and Edward have a nice chemistry as they try to figure out how to be in love with each other and the various pitfalls that are involved with human-vampire relations. The side characters are interesting and really fill out the story and the setting of the book. There are a few parts, especially in the middle that get a little slow, but it picks up the pace later on. You do have to get past the fact that the author disregards almost every last piece of vampire lore known the world over and re-writes it to fit her own likes and needs. So, in my opinion, he’s not really a vampire, but a new made-up mythical creature that is easier to fall in love with. Overall, a good high school romance.
