"Then it must have been some other vision, or perhaps a dream..."

Caught up in France after the war between Henry II and his sons, Helene is faced with the arrival of the king's representative - the Earl of Gunthar.  Helene has no interest in the man that laid seige to her home, though he is there to seal their loyalty by marrying her older sister.  But Helene finds herself interested in the man despite himself.  Perhaps there is more to him than his duty to the king.  Gunthar will do most anything for his king which included leading the attack against the rebelling Prince Nicholas but he has no intention of marrying to suit his king - probably.  The lovely Clothide has no appeal to him, but oddly the unconventional Helene does.  But he is the king's man and must do his duty.  But as attempts are made on his life, he is thrown together with Helene in a way that might prove more than he can withstand.

My Opinion: This book was well written and a thrill to read.  The characters are well developed and easy to relate to with a depth you don't always find in side characters.  It was really a whole story that was richly filled out rather than just a telling of the main two characters' story.  The mystery and plot are fantastic and involve you  so well that you won't be able to put it down.  I love the way the author weaves the many layers of loyalty each person has and how they have to decide which loyalties to put first.  Unlike many other books out there, you can actually understand all sides and feel the pull that each person has in so many different ways.  Absolute wonderful read and I highly recommend it.  I am anxious to read the next book!

I received a free copy of this book for review.  No other compensation was given.  The summary and opinion are 100% my own.

  2. Hi English Rose..
CJ's here. Thanks for coming by Coffee N Crackers and give a comment. Really appreciate that. This books sounds good. I just wondering why historical fiction authors always use women as the main characters? I hope that I can find one with man as the main character. any suggestion?

  3. CJ - I think perhaps historical fiction writers tend to female protagonists because so much of history is recorded about males and a writer has a lot more freedom of creativity with female characters. Since there is little factual evidence about most women, perhaps they can have more fun playing with it and not feel like they're betraying history. I don't know - just a thought. I read mostly romances so most of the books I read have female protagonists. Enchantment by Orson Scott Card is a fantasy/historical you might enjoy with a male main character. Fabulous book - I did a review of it. That's all I can think of right now, but I'll let you know if I think of more.
