The Reluctant Guardian
Kristy K James
"He'd seen men go to their own hangings with more enthusiasm than Adam displayed today. "
Devon's life in Boston has crumbled with the death of her parents and the desertion of her fiance. When their estranged grandfather passes, she and her brother head to Charleston to claim their inheritance. But things aren't all they seemed and perhaps life will hold even more cruelty for the young pair. Because if Adam doesn't manage to fix the plantation and make it profitable in three years, everything goes to their neighbor - and guardian - Tristan Montgomery. Tristan wants nothing to do with anyone related to his late neighbor. But he'll take on the role of guardian if it means he can get his hands on their land. But Adam is a nice kid, and Devon's beauty captures him at first sight. Could their be a future for them, or has her grandfather set them up to be enemies for life?
My Opinion: This was a pretty good and fun book. The characters were very likable and easy to get to know. Devon was a great mixture of strong woman and someone suffering from grief - and still acting her age. Tristan is a good man who is a bit volatile in his emotions but still sweet. The plot has potential to be more than it was. Obstacles would appear and then quickly resolve themselves, leaving you wondering what was actually going to stay and cause any problems for the happily ever after. It took a while to figure out what was going to happen overall instead of little issues of life coming up. I would have preferred it to take a little longer and allow the characters to learn and grow through them. It was still an enjoyable read, though the over-use of italics made it hard to get through at times.
