Author Interview: Taylor Dean

Today we have the chance to get to know a wonderful new author, Taylor Dean.  I've read one of her books and look forward to reading another.  So, let's hear a little more about her!

Give us a bit of your background (where are you from, your family, traveling adventures)

I grew up in San Jose, California, which is also where I met and married my hubby. He joined the Army and we spent 10 years active duty. We lived in California, Texas, Maryland, Alabama, and Korea. We settled in Texas and have been there ever since. I have four grown children and an adorable 10 month old grandson. I have another grandson, but we lost him to Trisomy 18 at eight months gestation—another story in and of itself—and something I will one day share on my blog.

I don’t like to travel because I get horribly motion sick, but that’s okay because I’m a bit of a home body. Which makes writing the perfect career choice for me!

What is your favorite genre to write?

ROMANCE. No matter what sub-genre I write in: paranormal, suspense, or contemporary, my books will always be romance.

What is your favorite genre to read?

ROMANCE. If a story does not include a romance, I feel it is lacking!

What is one silly fact about you?

I am addicted to American Idol, Survivor, DWTS, and SYTYCD!

What got you started on your writing journey?

I have always had stories floating around in my head. But, I wasn’t daydreaming, I was writing the stories in my head, sentence by sentence. All. The. Time.  The first few pages of two of my stories were written twenty years ago! Unfortunately, back then I just didn’t have the time to write. Once my four children were grown, I finally had the time to commit my stories to paper. It was such a relief, as if the story was dying to be told. Once I write them, I no longer think about them. It’s as if I’ve been liberated.

Why do you choose to write clean/sweet romance?  Do you write steamy romance as well?

I love to read romance, but I don’t care to read explicit scenes. I think part of my desire to write clean romance came from reading romance novels. I found myself thinking, this is such a good book, if only this scene and that scene had been left out. I also found myself wishing for deeper emotional connections, not just physical connections. Personally, I don’t see romance in two people hooking up based solely on physical attraction. Then I realized the only way the kind of book I wanted to read would ever be available to readers, is if I wrote it myself! I like to write passionate books without explicit detail, in other words, fade-to-black romance—close the bedroom door. I also like my characters to be married before intimacy occurs. It’s just what I’m personally comfortable with writing. This is the kind of romance novel you will get from me! I don’t write steamy romance—and I never will.

Do you have a favorite comment or question from a reader?

Taylor Dean is a fantastic story teller and she is definitely one of the best new authors I have come across since I started this blog.  –Shelly of Dive Under the Cover

I was spellbound by Lancaster House. Ms Dean has really outdone herself with this book. The story was utterly entrancing and completely absorbing. –Mandy of The Thoughts of a Girl

Wow! What an intense and refreshing book! It pulled me in from the very first page! Lancaster House is not your same ole paranormal romance that we all have come to know and expect! Oh no! There was no way I could have guessed all the twists and turns that are held in this book! –Jess of Book Liaison

How many books have you written, and how many of those have been published?

I have written 6 novels to date. I am slowly releasing them over the next year and a half, to include the sequel to Lancaster House. I write in all of the many sub-genres of romance. I plan to write a military romance and a futuristic romance next.  With the fabulous reaction to Lancaster House, I may end up writing more paranormal, though!

Lancaster House came about as a challenge from my daughter! She called me one day and begged me to write a paranormal novel. It’s her favorite genre.  Honestly, I all but scoffed at the idea. My mind just doesn’t think that way. Or so I thought! I promised my daughter that I’d think about a plot. But, I really doubted that it would ever happen. About this time I was watching Season 8 of American Idol. In the finale, Adam Lambert performed his rendition of ‘Mad World’ on a fog shrouded stage wearing vampire-like garb. This performance sparked my creative juices. My imagination went wild! And that is how Lancaster House was born. That’s all it took!

Use no more than two sentences. Why should we read your book?

I’ll quote a reviewer:  I guarantee you have never read any other book that is remotely like this one.

Do you have a favorite character you have written so far?

While I LOVE my characters in Lancaster House, I’d have to choose Alex in Sierra as my favorite. Sierra was my first book and it was my first time creating a romantic hero. He’s the perfect man. He’s filled with very human emotion, making him imperfect, yet lovable. He is also filled with fiery, intense emotion, making him intriguing. He’s also a very kind man, which makes him . . . well, enough said.

Thank you for being with us, Taylor!
