Give us a bit of your background (where are you from, your family, traveling adventures)
I was born in Salt Lake City, UT but my family moved nearly every year until I graduated from high school. I've lived in Idaho, Montana, Nebraska, and Colorado as well. When I was little I hated moving so much - it was so hard to make new friends in a new school every year. Now, though, I am grateful for all the different locations I've lived in because I have built-in book material!
What is your favorite genre to write?
Historical fiction, and suspense are my favorites, but I don't really ever want to be forced into writing only one genre. My newest manuscript is a light-romantic comedy.
What is one silly fact about you?
I really, really, re-e-e-e-ally hate hair in the sink, on the floor, or in the tub!!!! Yuk.
What is the most rewarding thing about being a writer?
One of the most rewarding moments I have had happened when a man told me that he had struggled to read his entire life, and that he was dyslexic. He said his wife bought my book and told him how much she'd enjoyed it, so he decided to give it a try. He said he started reading, and even though he struggled with his dyslexia, he kept at it because he couldn't put it down. He said it took him awhile to get through it, but he loved it and couldn't wait for my next book. I felt so humbled and so grateful that I was able to provide this man with a worthwhile reading experience.
Do you have a favorite comment or question from a reader?
I was at a book signing and a woman looked at the cover of my book, read my name and said, "Are you Vickie?" I said I was. Then she looked at me and said, "Did you write this book?"
Where do your ideas come from?
Some of my ideas come in my dreams. I am a very vivid dreamer, full color, very detailed, and I am able to remember most of them. Because I enjoy writing historical fiction, I often watch the history channel and find some inspiration from that.
Use no more than two sentences. Why should we read your book?
The secrets that are kept in the Red Box have the ability to destroy lives. You won't know who's, how, or if...until the very end.
Do you have a favorite character you have written so far?
I loved my character, Bonnie Cooper, the protangonist in Secrets of the Red Box. She's very complicated, flawed, and far more real than most fictional characters. The great thing about her, though, is how she is transformed by love - something she's known little about in her life. She is somewhat tragic, but also very vulnerable and a tenacious survivor.
