The "What If" Guy

Brooke Moss
Contemporary Romance

"Unfortunately, on this particular road, in this particular county, blatant observations tended to be even more antagonizing."

Thirteen years ago, Autumn walked away from the love of her life.  She left to have another man's baby, but she never forgot Henry.  Now, returning to her old hometown to care for her estranged and now ailing father, Autumn must face her past.  Not only the small town who were a part of her painful childhood, but it seems that Henry has moved to town as well.  And he is her son's teacher.  Henry is going through a divorce and seemingly has moved on.  As small towns go, they cannot seem to avoid each other.  As Autumn begins to rebuild her life, does she dare think she may get a second chance at true love?

My Opinion: This was a good book that followed a good storyline all the way through.  Dealing with a wide range of emotions, loyalties, and personal growth.  A wide variety of characters created the small-town feel and flushed out the setting and story.  The story focused on Autumn and to be honest I think she was a bit immature and annoying at times, but alternately she was a very realistic and fallible character.  Henry was a perfect dream guy through most of the book.  Their romance was sweet but a little dry.  More of a story about finding home and not running from your problems or fears.  I have to note that the morals seemed a bit iffy in hindsight: closed door yes, but respective marital statuses were an issue for me.

I received a free copy of this book to review.  No other compensation was given.  The summary and review are 100% my own.

The Role of a Lifetime

Jennifer Shirk
Contemporary Romance

"He didn't exactly look like the loving Father Knows Best type, considering a fire-breathing skull tattoo wasn't designed to instill tenderness."

Sandra's only focuses these days are on her pre-school and her daughter.  Her ex-husband's only focus is on his acting career - just as it's always been.  So when heart-throb actor Ben invades her little school to research a movie role, Sandra is less than excited.  He's cute and sometimes sweet, but she won't give her heart to a man who will break it again - especially not an actor.  Ben needs something more from his life and suspects that a new kind of acting role is the answer.  Spending time with a bunch of children is not his idea of a good time, but he'll do what he has to.  Being around the alluring Sandra is an added bonus.  But he can't get involved with the pre-school teacher and then leave - it's not good for his new image.  Can he keep his hands and his heart away from her?

My Opinion: Another fun a lighthearted romance from Jennifer Shirk.  This was a sweet and enjoyable book with wonderful characters.  Quirky situations and great romance sucked me into the story while keeping a good pace.  Sandra is a good blend of uptight and strong mixed with a longing for love.  Ben is sweet and lovable and overly confident in an endearing way.  They mesh and interact well with each other.  I was rooting for them the whole time.  It's nice to see a contemporary novel that is a sweet romance without trying to delve into the deeper psyche of the modern mind.  Sit back and enjoy this great romance!

Book Preview for Debbie Macomber's Newest Book

I am happy to tell you about a new book (and series) coming out in August by Debbie Macomber.  Thanks to the wonderful people at Random House Publishing, I not only got a sneak peek at this new novel, but so do you!  The description is below and then you can click on the link and read a snippet of the book before it comes out!!

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Debbie Macomber comes a heartwarming new series based in the Pacific Northwest town of Cedar Cove, where a charming cast of characters finds love, forgiveness, and renewal behind the doors of the cozy Rose Harbor Inn.

Jo Marie Rose first arrives in Cedar Cove seeking a sense of peace and a fresh start. Coping with the death of her husband, she purchases a local bed-and-breakfast—the newly christened Rose Harbor Inn—ready to begin her life anew. Yet the inn holds more surprises than Jo Marie can imagine.

Her first guest is Joshua Weaver, who has come home to care for his ailing stepfather. The two have never seen eye to eye, and Joshua has little hope that they can reconcile their differences. But a long-lost acquaintance from Joshua’s high school days proves to him that forgiveness is never out of reach and love can bloom even where it’s least expected.

The other guest is Abby Kincaid, who has returned to Cedar Cove to attend her brother’s wedding. Back for the first time in twenty years, she almost wishes she hadn’t come, the picturesque town harboring painful memories from her past. And while Abby reconnects with family and old friends, she realizes she can only move on if she truly allows herself to let go.

A touching novel of life’s grand possibilities and the heart’s ability to heal,
The Inn at Rose Harbor is a welcome introduction to an unforgettable set of friends.

Hidden in the Heart: an LDS Novel

Roseanne Evans Wilkins
Christian Romance
Contemporary Romance

"I bet a round of golf you couldn‟t make a date with her by, say, the end of the week."

The most horrific event of Cathee's life brought her it's most precious gift - her daughter.  Several years later she is still dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder and struggling as a single mother.  Taking a small vacation seems safe enough, uneventful even.  But that was before she met Garrett.  Garrett is a therapist speaking at the conference at the same hotel.  For him, though, the idea of tagging along with Cathee and her daughter is more appealing than another set of lectures he knows by heart.  Will they be able to overcome their pasts and work towards a future?  And when the past rears its ugly head, will they even have a chance to find out?

My Opinion: I felt like this book took on too much within the confines of a single novel.  With deep and emotional issues ranging from rape, post traumatic stress syndrome, death, and more, I became overwhelmed with the heavy emotions.  There was an interesting premise behind this book and it had some action and excitement to it, but I didn't get a balance of sweet with the serious.  The characters had a good interaction but the romance was light.  As a note, as indicated in subtitle, the LDS influence was very strong in this story.

I received a free copy of this book to review.  No other compensation was given.  The summary and review are 100% my own.

A Limited Engagement

Saralee Etter
Regency Romance
E-Book

"His plans for the future did not include socializing to any degree and a housekeeper could take care of his living quarters.  So why did he need to be burdened with a wife?"

Thanks to her father's reckless gambling and subsequent death, Miranda is left with no other options than to work at her brother-in-law's theater as an actress.  Surely her love for Shakespeare will help her be successful.  When her brother-in-law is wrongly arrested, Miranda and her sister find themselves desperate for money to free him.  Lord Justin Devereux's uncle demands that he settle down and marry before he can access his inheritance.  Preferably to the woman his aunt has picked out for him.  But Justin won't give in.  What he needs is a temporary fiance...someone to act like a respectable woman he will settle down with.  Perhaps they can help each other.  Will their masquerade convince everyone?

My Opinion: This is in essence what a regency romance book should be.  It is cute, funny and has a wonderfully sweet romance.  Miranda is a great character with strength and appeal.  Her willingness to do what she needs to and not give in to the fate dealt to her is admirable.  Justin is sweet and shows wonderful growth and is a great hero.  His drive to gain access to his fortune and leave London is admirable and creates an unusual situation.  Their romance is sweet and fun and toe-tingling.  The various side characters were wonderful, both good and bad.  This story kept me coming back for more.  I would highly recommend this one.

I received a free copy of this book for review.  No other compensation was given.  The summary and review are 100% my own.

A Wife By Accident

Victoria Ashe
Contemporary Romance

"Those glossy grey eyes full of fear and uncertainty made him want to gather her into his arms and apologize for ever meeting her."

When Hayely left the prestigious world of her parents to escape others making decisions for her, she didn't think she'd find herself with even less options.  At a job she doesn't like, Hayely can't quit because she needs the money.  But when a chance encounter leaves her in debt to a man that she can never repay, she may find that she has no choice after all.  But perhaps it won't be so bad.  Gary needs a wife - at least a temporary one.  A childhood promise to keep, he is determined to prove himself stable and responsible.  In a word - married.  Hayely seems like the perfect solution.  At least for six months.  But what happens when six months ends?

My Opinion: This was a very cute book with some surprising plausibility.  The author created a strange but believable situation for a platonic spur-of-the-moment marriage.  Hayely is independent and sweet, though a little naive.  Gary is seemingly motivated to be this wonderful person with a childhood goal to fulfill, but doesn't fill out enough for me.  I would have liked to get a better feel for their characters and emotions - feel his focus and and determination; see her need for independence. As it was, though likable, the characters were a little weak.  The story was fun, but didn't have a lot of twists or problems come up which led to a choppy and slightly flat-line plot.  It was a nice light read, though constant perspective jumping left me a little dizzy.

I was given a free copy of this book to review.  No other compensation was given.  The summary and review are 100% my own.

A Lady By Any Other Name

Jennifer Kitchens
Regency Romance

"Whoever said that things look better in the morning obviously did not live in London."

Nicole Farrington’s life had never been easy, but it had always been bearable.  At least it had been until now.  Faced with a horrible marriage her step-brother has contracted for her, she will do anything to get away.  She’ll run…run to anyone who might be able to help her.  But running blindly down an unknown path may take her to an unexpected destination.  Julian Huntington, Earl of Foxley, wants nothing more than to have his carefree life back.  Now he is left with a title, a child, and a future that he never expected would be his.  He refuses to believe his brother’s death was an accident, no matter what people say.  Someone killed him and Julian plans to find out who and why.  Maybe then he can go on with his life…his brother’s life.  Will the answers he seeks be enough, or will he find love to be a worthier goal?

My Opinion: Okay, well, today is going to be a little different.  Because if I were to be honest, I would say that this was the most wonderful, exciting, romantic, and simply perfect book ever written. :)  But that would be a little unfair and a lot biased.  Why?  Did you notice the author's name?  Yep, that's ME!  After years of work and my husband's encouragement, I finally finished my first book and it is available.  So while there are a few reviews you can find on Amazon or Goodreads for this title so far, and hopefully more coming, I don't think I can fairly review this myself.  I can, however, recommend it as a clean regency romance that I personally do think you'll enjoy.  :)

Blog Tour: The Carny by Brooke Moss

I am happy to include my first guest post and participate in this blog tour.  I hope you enjoy this article about Brooke Moss and learning about her and her new book.  Read through to the end to find a giveaway too! :)

No Smexing? Why Not?
By Brooke Moss

Hello, and thanks for having me here on the Clean Romance Reviews Blog! As a long time fan of this blog, and an author of “smexing-free” books, I was ecstatic to contribute.
A reviewer recently asked me for my latest novel, The Carny, why I didn’t write out the sex scenes between my heroine, Charlotte, and her handsome hero, Vincent. Surprisingly enough, I was really glad to have the chance to explain my “fade-to-black” bedroom scenes to the world. When my debut novel, The What If Guy, came out, I was asked that question all the time, but never took the time to answer it. Today’s my chance…
When I set out to become a published author I knew a couple of things for sure: 1.) That I had a boatload of stories to share. And 2.) That whatever story I told, there had to be an element of romance. As an avid reader of the romance genre, I love anything that is centered on love. Whether that is sci-fi, fantasy, contemporary, women’s fiction, or YA…I crave an element of romance like chocolate. Books simply don’t feel right to me without it.
I’m an equal opportunity reader. I read everything from what is considered to be “sweet” romance, “fade-to-black” romance (like the books I’ve written), to some pretty awesome smexing on the page. I admire authors who can write sensual and erotic scenes, the eye for detail and logistics is impeccable. But as an author, my comfort zone stops just short of a sex scene. I think every writer has a comfort zone. Some don’t like to write exceptionally violent scenes, others don’t mind it. Some don’t enjoy writing about worlds that don’t really exist, and tend to feel more comfortable with contemporary settings. And some—like me, for instance—aren’t necessarily comfortable writing about the entire act of sex.
Here’s the deal: I have four kids. I know how it’s done, and how wonderful it can be. For me, when I am writing a scene, I don’t feel like my characters need me to provide all of their personal details. Plus, as my children grow up, and I work hard to teach them a certain level of behavior and morality, how can I expect them to avoid things of an excessive sexual nature, if my books have gratuitous sexual content? It’s not that I think books with full sex scenes aren’t good…it just means that, personally, I am more comfortable writing books without them. In my life, I’ve made a commitment to my husband, my family, and my faith to keep my sexuality private and only between my husband and myself. This made my decision to write “fade-to-black” books very simple for me.
I think every reader, and author, has to come to the determination of what level of sensuality they’re comfortable with on their own. I have critique partners who write books that while they are more sensual than mine, they both write their books in a very respectful, classy style that I am more than impressed with. They’ve found their own comfort zones, and perfected their craft within it. I’m impressed with that. The great thing about books is that there is a heat level for all readers, and not one reader goes without!

Thank you so much for having me on the Clean Romance Reviews Blog today. Here’s a little bit about my latest release, from InkSpell Publishing, The Carny:
At a town fair on the coast of Oregon, handsome Native American carny, Vincent Youngblood, bestows an unforgettable kiss on shy, awkward teenager, Charlotte Davenport. Then he disappears without another word, leaving her baffled and enamored.
Ten years later, Charlotte is still living in the small fishing town of Astoria, while being trained to--reluctantly--take over for her philandering hotelier father when he retires. After all, who else will do it? Her two perfect sisters are busy being married to their flawless husbands and having cookie cutter children, while Charlotte remains single, childless, and every bit as mousy as she was a decade ago.
As Charlotte struggles to climb out from underneath her judgmental parents thumb, the carnival rolls back into town, and Charlotte finds herself face to face with Vin again. He's back to run his father's carnival, walking away from a promising career in medicine he started in Chicago. Will her biased and judgmental family accept her relationship with a man who is not only a Native American, but works as a carny for a living? And what unsavory secrets bind the well-educated and seemingly superlative Vin to that ramshackle carnival? After all, you can’t judge a carny by its cover.”
Here’s a little bit about me: “Brooke writes complex, character-driven stories about kismet, reunited lovers, first love, and the kind of romance that we should all have the chance at finding. She prefers her stories laced with some humor just for fun, and enough drama to keep her readers flipping the pages, and begging for more!” Find me elsewhere on the web here: www.brookemoss.com and order your copy of The Carny here: www.inkspellpublishing.com

Enter below for a chance to win a copy of The Carny.  Up for grabs is 1 paperback copy and 4 e-book copies!  Print copy is open to the US, e-book is open internationally.  Please note that while the code is on my site, I am neither running the giveaway nor am picking/contacting the winners.  This giveaway was created and is being run by the publisher.

Hazardous Hideaway

Cindy A. Christiansen
Contemporary Romance
E-Book

"They usually had so much paint on them, they couldn't even blush."

Dallas has to keep going.  If she stops, Ray might catch up to her and he won't just leave her with a few bruises and smoke-filled hair.  Next time he will kill her.  But when her truck crashes trying to avoid a deer, Dallas has no choice but to work off the debts she owes for damages.  Working at the dairy isn't ideal, especially since every seems to want her gone for no particular reason at all.  Tom wants her gone.  Having learned not to trust women, he wants nothing to do with one that has a horse in tow.  Not after what happened three years ago.  But the stubborn woman won't leave until she has earned enough to pay him back.  And by then, will he be able to let her go?

My Opinion: This book had a great potential of mystery and suspense, but unfortunately did not live up to it.  I often felt lost due to choppy narrative, numerous typos and a strong preference for the use of strange metaphors and language.  Shallow characters with hard to comprehend motivations made it impossible to really get into this book.  Tom was too brusque for my tastes, while Dallas was a practice in contradictions.  Their romance, while it seemed to be there, didn't come out and shine.  While I enjoyed the mystery, there were few clues to be able to unfold it, though it was good by the end when I finally figured it all out.  Overall, I was disappointed in this book since I have read this author before and liked the other one.

I received a free copy of this book to review.  No other compensation was given.  The summary and review are 100% my own.

Candid

Michelle Pennington
Book 1 in True Images Series
Contemporary Romance
Young Adult

"I could have appreciated him just as much if I'd seen him in a magazine ad, but no, he had to be standing right in front of me - tempting and real and impossible."

Sienna is not interested in high school boys, so following her mother's strict no-dating rule has never been a problem.  Until now.  When Lee moves into school he proves to be the only one able to distract her from her obsession with photography.  But her talent for and love of photography sparks a new plan in Sienna's mind. Can she change the tides of popularity at her school - helping those often overlooked while taking a certain cheerleader down a peg or two?  When meddling with aspiring homecoming queens, things can get messy.  Can Sienna deal with an angry cheerleader while trying to have a relationship that isn't a real relationship with the hottest guy in school?

My Opinion: This was a fun young adult romance with all the drama of high school.  Sienna, the main character, is fun and enjoyable.  Her motivations to follow her mother's crazy rules and also to seek vengeance on the popular kids seemed a little strange, but I went with it.  Lee is sweet and kind and almost too good to be true.  Their romance is sweet and a great example of self-control and dedication.  The various other characters create a satisfying world of high school for the characters to interact within.  Overall a cute and fun read and I enjoyed.

Serial Games

K Victoria Chase
Book 1 of Virginia Justice Series
Contemporary Romance
E-Book

"His firm grip and million-dollar smile nearly put Maggie in a trance."

Maggie Weston is an FBI profiler who took down a serial killer on a rampage in Culpeper, Virginia.  But that was last year.  Now that the trial is over, it seems that Burrows has escaped and is on the run again.  Now Maggie must team up with US Marshal Brandon Worth to catch him before he kills again.  Convinced that Burrows has returned to his hometown, Maggie is confused when he starts changing his patterns.  Of course, Brandon's hot and cold response to the attraction sizzling between them is confusing as well.  Will they be able to catch a killer in time?  And what will happen to them once the case is over?

My Opinion: Although this book started with good potential for a suspenseful romance, I felt that it missed it's mark by trying to take on too much.  Despite a complicated premise of an escaped serial killer with no bodies recovered and a massive manhunt, I didn't feel the suspense of it since too much of the story was slow, choppy and not focused on the search.  With a strong Christian theme bordering on preachy, the main character's backgrounds are intense.  They were interesting, but didn't have time to really come out and shine like I would have wanted, with little time for personal growth.  The romance was interesting and fun, though a bit confusing at times.  Overall an interesting idea that fell a little short of its potential.

I received a free copy of this book to review.  No other compensation was given.  The summary and review are 100% my own.
