The Unexpected Earl

Philippa Jane Keyworth
Regency Romance

"Propriety really was a burden at times."

Julia Rotherham and Lucius Wolversley never thought to see each other again.  Not after he had cried off of their engagement six years ago without an explanation.  Lucius had been careful to stay away, but when a friend drags him to a ball, he finds himself on the very doorstep he vowed to never darken again.  When he comes upon Julia again, she is as beautiful as ever, and in need of an explanation as ever, too.  It seems, however, that this time she seems determined to rebuff him, and turn her attentions to another.  Can he walk away again?  Julia, for her part, has never forgiven Lucius for jilting her, and now that he's back in her life she is determined to make him suffer for it.  But will she find satisfaction in driving him away?  Perhaps not, but being together may prove more dangerous than even she realizes.

My Opinion: This was a classical period-piece in my opinion.  The story started off extremely slow, agonizing over an untold past of our main characters.  The characters themselves were wonderful, as were the side characters who created a rich tapestry of plot and leaves you wondering if they each don't have their own story to tell.  The romance was sweet, but a little stilted in its development.  The second half of the story had a lot more action and fun than the first half, but it made up for it and then had the background to stand on.  I did feel that there was quite a lot of prose which seemed to almost overly explain the research done to what the rules and norms of society were at the time.  While this may be helpful for those new to reading regency romances, to those of us who have been reading them for decades it seemed a bit superfluous.

I received a free copy of this book to review.  No other compensation was given.  The summary and review are 100% my own.
