Author Interview: Heather Beck

Give us a bit of your background.

My name is Heather Beck, and I’m an Author/Screenwriter who has been writing professionally since the age of sixteen.

My first book was published when I was nineteen years old. Since then I have written several more books. I recently received an Honors Bachelor of Arts from university where I specialized in English and studied an array of disciplines.

Currently, I’m working on two young adult novels and have six anthologies slated for publication. As a screenwriter, I have multiple television shows and movies in development. My short films include Young Eyes, The Rarity and Too Sensible For Love. Besides writing, my greatest passion is the outdoors. I’m an award-winning fisherwoman and a regular hiker. My hobbies include swimming, playing badminton and volunteering with non-profit organizations.

Say your publisher has offered to fly you anywhere in the world to do research on an upcoming book, where would you most likely want to go?
I’d love to visit Egypt. I like Egyptian lore, and I find the pyramids completely fascinating. It’s just so exotic, and it’s definitely the perfect setting for a paranormal romance.

What is your favorite genre to write?
I’ve been obsessed with the paranormal genre for as long as I can remember. I began writing supernatural tales in 2004, and I haven’t stopped since then! I love typical paranormal creatures, such as: vampires, werewolves, mermaids, sirens, ghosts and shape shifters; however, I also love creating completely new creatures.

What is one silly fact about you?
I teach chipmunks to do cute tricks!

Why do you choose to write clean/sweet romance? Do you write steamy romance as well?
I truly believe that the sweetest aspects of romance are the emotions. I’m interested in writing about the connection two people share, and then developing their relationship slowly and beautifully. My romances are about knowing yourself and what you want, never settling, experiencing the rush of new love and finding your soulmate. Not all my romances are about finding true love though. Some of my paranormal tales are cautionary, and depict how romance can turn bad when you choose the wrong man. First and foremost, these latter types of tales are exciting and filled with twists and turns. The moral lessons take a backseat. I write to entertain, never preach! Although I don’t write really steamy romances, my stories are always filled with passion and desire.

What other things do you have planned with your writing for the rest of the year 2013?
The year 2012 was a great one for my writing career; however, I’m really looking forward to 2013. My teen drama, Vocations, has just been re-released, my fourth book in The Horror Diaries series, Supernatural, will be released in June, and I’m currently working on several projects. On the screenwriting side, I’m working with a production company on a supernatural TV show for kids and I have a couple of shorts being filmed.

What is the most rewarding thing about being a writer?
The most rewarding aspect of being a writer is getting to hold my book or see my film. A lot of work and love goes into each story I create, so it’s always sublime to see the final product. Additionally, getting to share my tales with other people means so much to me. I know I will be writing books and screenplays for the rest of my life.

Do you have a favorite comment or question from a reader?
I love getting e-mails and letters from readers, and I couldn’t pick just one favorite comment. What I find really amazing, though, is being asked for my autograph. It is such an honor and I’m always happy to fulfill that request.

How much of your personality and life experiences are in your writing?
When I first started writing, so much of my fiction was autobiographical. I’ve had many unique experiences in my life, and I would incorporate that into my writing. This was especially true when I was creating main characters; I always bestowed my personality traits upon them. This isn’t the case anymore. I now write main characters that are very different from myself in both thought and action. It’s definitely more challenging to create such unique characters, but it’s also very rewarding.

Please share about your book.
Whispers In The Shadows is a paranormal romance anthology for new adult/adult readers. It’s part of the Legends Unleashed series which features fast-paced plots, unexpected twists and multifaceted characters. The series is concerned with emotional and physical emancipation; essentially, transcending the ordinary to find a beautiful life. The protagonist is always a strong woman who finds romance with an extraordinary man. Legends Unleashed is definitely an escapist series inspired by imagination and boundless possibilities.

Specifically regarding Whispers In The Shadows, I’d love to share this blurb with you:

Fall in love, if you dare…

Inside these pages are jilted ghosts who seek revenge, a sexy tour guide with deadly secrets, cunning mermen who emerge from the ocean, a magical forest where love truly can last for eternity, and a new breed of men who are too good to be true.

Filled with chills, twists and boundless passion, Whispers In The Shadows explores the beauty of love along with its darker side.

Use no more than two sentences. Why should we read your book?
You’ve never read tales like these before. I promise.
