Author Interview: S Jean Brenner

Sara J Bernhardt
author, In Gray

Give us a bit of your background (where are you from, your family, traveling adventures)

I am a born and bred California girl. I have an amazing family who have always been very supportive.

Most writers are readers. What are some of the books you have on your nightstand and/or on your "must read" list?

My favorite authors are Anne Rice and J.R.R. Tolkien. I feel that people should also try to read the classics too. Like Edgar Allen Poe and Charles Dickens.

What is your favorite genre to write?

I love to write any genre of fiction and fantasy. I believe in magic and the fantastic and I wan to make others believe it too—at least while they are reading.

What is your favorite genre to read?

I enjoy reading all genres of fiction as well.

What got you started on your writing journey?

Since I was a little girl, I wanted to write stories. Before I was old enough to write, I told stories.

Why do you choose to write clean/sweet romance? Do you write steamy romance as well?

I feel that romance doesn’t need to be steamy to reach people. I prefer the sweeter side of romance as that’s who I am.

What other things do you have planned with your writing for the next year or so?

I plan to write a sequel to In Gray and focus on a couple other reworks of older books.

How much of your personality and life experiences are in your writing?

I don’t self insert but my characters do seem to take on some personality traits of the people in my life. My own experiences do find their way into my books.

Where do your ideas come from?

My ideas come from all over but my biggest inspiration is a dream I call Adam. I have been dreaming of him as long as I can remember. I think I have found him somewhere in my husband. He has always been my muse.

Please share about your book

My book, In Gray focuses on the life of Daisy Carmichael. Daisy’s life is forever changed after a devastating car crash. Nobody remembers the boy who pulled her from the wreckage; the boy who saved her life. She believed she was crazy. That is, until the dreams started. The dreams that force Daisy into a role she never asked for.

If you could sum your main character into five words, what would they be?

Stubborn, outspoken, brave, loving, artistic

Do you have a favorite character you have written so far?

I love all my characters but I feel a certain connection with Kristoff, the brother of the hero.
